Medan Students Win At World Robotic Olympiad

The 2009 World Robot Olympiad took place at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science & Technology), one of the most respected research universities in Korea, on last November 6th-8th. This was the 6th Olympiad and the first to take place in Korea, after it was held in Yokohama, Japan last year.

This event brought together 250 teams (more than 1000 participants) from 32 countries, including Indonesia. This year, the Indonesia team was represented by the team from our town Medan. The team was from PRIMEONE School, a private school in Medan.

And this year, the students from Prime One School Medan show their ability by winning several categories.
* Ivy Icasia and Patricia Dissy Andrea both Secondary 3 students in Team Creator won 2nd place in the Junior Category.
* Billy Hocker Wistan and Fenando both Secondaru 3 students in Team Alpha Rex won 3rd place in Junior Category.
* Kelvin Onggadinata and Margaretha Hutabarat both Primary 6 students in Team Innocent won 5th place in the Elementary Category.

In the Regular Category, teams are broken up into Elementary, Junior High, and High School divisions and are only allowed to use LEGO Mindstorms kits. The Elementary students will compete in the Iron Robot Triathlon, where a robot works its way through a maze and shoots a ping pong ball into a goal. Junior High school students compete in Robot Match, where robots must collect ping pong balls and bring them back to base camp. High School students compete in Robot Pocketball, where robots pass over an obstacle and push colored balls into same-color pockets. All of the teams have only 2 minutes to complete the mission objective and only one shot at it.

Besides the main competitions and events, 16 Korean robots including POSTECH’s own PHOPE and Genibo (Dasarobot’s robo dog) and approximately 60 companies in total will be exhibiting their robots.

This year’s Open Category theme is “Art and Robots” with the tag line “Dreaming of Robot, Desire of Human” – contestants must build a robot that best represents the theme.

Congratulations to PrimeOne School students.

LEGO Pirates Event – Meet & Greet Pirate

Another great and fun activities during the LEGO Pirate Event at Sun Plaza Medan was the Meet & Greet with LEGO Pirate. A giant costume of LEGO Pirate replica was made and it was a big wow for the visitors of the Sun Plaza Medan.

Take a look at how the kids & their moms surrounding the pirate for picture taking.

The teenagers were also keen to take pictures.

Another great fun for kids was that they were not only meeting the “pirate”, but they can be the pirate themselves. Supported by Professional Photo Studio, one of the largest photography studio in Jalan Iskandar Muda, Medan. With certain amount of purchase of LEGO products, the kid was entitled for one photo session in pirate costume for free. We had hundreds of photos taken on this 3 weeks event.

LEGO Pirates Event – Building The Pirate

This is to continue the previous post on LEGO Pirates Event in Sun Plaza, Medan, Indonesia from 22 June – 12 July 2008

In this post, I will try to describe the process of building the giant pirate.
The pirate was divided into several parts :
– The pirate hat
– The pirate head
– The pirate body
– The pirate legs
– The parrot

In this LEGO Pirate Events, we invited kids from Kingston School, Medan to help the process of building this giant pirate. Due to its complexity (for kids), the pirate body was built by the employee of LEGO sub distributor in Medan, while the head and parrot were already glued.

Take a look at the picture below for the process of building by the Kingston School students guided by our team member.

LEGO Pirates is one of the best LEGO event ever held in Medan.

LEGO Pirate

For 3 weeks, Sun Plaza guests experienced the “LEGO” environment.

Entering the mall main door, you will be greeted by “friendly” pirates from the mall customer service.

The main attraction of course will be the LEGO Pirate Showcase : a huge 6×8m2 display of LEGO City and the Pirates World

In the center of the showcase was the brand new 2.15m high pirates built up with 20,800 pieces of LEGO! The first pirate was built and exhibited in the US, and Medan has the honor to receive a brand new one from LEGO and be the first in Asia (2nd in the world) to show it off to LEGO fans in Asia.

Although it was the first competition ever been held, but the response was fantastic. Medanese were so enthusiastic. Kids and their parents came to join the competition, bringing their own LEGO Racers, which by then was one of the first LEGO product sold in Medan.

The competition itself was carried out in 2 phase :

– Build & race
