Being relatively new to the world of LEGO trains, when I heard of this book I thought it would be a great reference tool to help me expand my enjoyment of my hobby. However, I was a little disappointed.
The book is a strong introduction to LEGO trains if you are completely unfamiliar with them, but even a novice with only one or two LEGO train sets would already know much of the information contained in the book.
What saves the book is the large centre section dedicated to building plans for three interesting LEGO train models. These alone make the book worth having, even with the several errors contained in the building plans.
I believe the book would have been enhanced by eliminating the intorductory sections up front (or at least greatly condensing them) and using the space for more information such as that contained in the last section. This section outlines ways to enhance your LEGO train experience through the addition of things like bridges and elevated track. Perhaps more in this vein, such as the design of trackside structures, signals, buildings, towns, junctions and topography (hills, mountains, etc.) might be a more interesting choice.

This book is good, it’s great for building any train box car, etc. . You can also use this book to use in Lego’s LDD (Lego Digital designer), you may not have all the pieces in there but you could build about anything. All in all this book is really great for building anything that is train. Great for rail fans alike!

Good for the price but didn’t really offer much insight. As a beginner I wish it had more on how to lay out track and less as an idea book.

Great guide
lot of history
couple of buidling instructions (including double container wagon TTX)
Easy to read
Clear explanations and ideas

This book delivers pretty much what you would expect.
The first part covers some general background on the Lego 9V train system (if you are looking for info on the newer RC stuff, this book is not for you). The second part gives detailed building instructions for some cars and an engine. The last chapter gives some track layout ideas. The book is written in a very to-the-point style and very well illustrated.
The projects suggested are very nice, though it might be hard finding some of the parts Jake suggests using.
The only reason I didn’t give this book five stars is that it leaves me wanting more…..
