A Humbled Modular

The Michigan LEGO Train Club at Ann Arbor Train Show was held this past Sunday, February 20, 2011 in Saline, Michigan. The models were created by members of the MichLTC, and as one can see, they were huge. I really like this shot because it captures the enormity behind the models. The small brown building in the middle would be quite large compared to Cafe Corner or Green Grocer, but in fact is relatively minuscule in this layout. So cool! War Machines Strike

Nice Truck

Théo (Titolian) has just posted a very nice little truck. This truck looks truly utilitarian, with just a splash of color thrown on by its corporate owners. There’s also a bit of a near-future sci-fi flair, which is near to my heart.

The last time I had a chance to build (over a month ago), I was attempting a truck myself. I really appreciate some of the solutions for shaping that he’s found. The slope of the windshield, in particular, looks good to me, especially as it relates to the fenders.

The Manticore orbital death machine

Blake Foster‘s third SHIP is a superweapon with the power to “destroy nearly anything produced by humankind.” This 180 stud long model has some eye-catching features like the spherical bridge and the asymmetrical design of the mid-section. Cosmic Fleet Voyager

Shamisenfred has just posted the first segment of what I hope will continue to be a great project. He is building a remake of the classic space set Cosmic Fleet Voyager.

I’m enjoying the style of this remake, the rounded fuselage has a cool anime vibe to me. The round body together with the stuby wings can’t help but feel cute. The windows on the side are also just pure win.

Beautiful curves of the Phenix

Christophe Corthay‘s Star Trek inspired Vulcan ship called the Phenix has some of the craziest curves I’ve seen. They’re crazy because not only are there so many rings, but they are also textured by SNOT techniques. I can’t imagine the amount of strain in this model, which could make it explode at any moment. But for what it’s worth, the result looks drop dead gorgeous.

Tough but Fair

This new ship by Marcin N (martin86bb) has a vibe I really like. It’s a little ugly, a little boxy, and it all just works. It reads as a utilitarian space ship, and like it was really designed purposefully. The builder doesn’t describe the function of the ship, but I like to think it could be the space equivalent of a tug boat or shunting locomotive.

There are just enough details around the engine section to really work (and I’m always a fan of a little hexalateral symmetry). The chairs as fins are also a nice touch.
