Gorgeous fan-built LEGO Technic Porsche 919, the 2015 Le Mans winner

Manuel Nascimento built this incredible LEGO Technic Porsche 919 after watching the real-life car win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015. Not content to simply recreate the stunning shape out of LEGO, Manuel also decorated his car like the real one, saying, “I had too much fun decorating the car but at the same time I also had a lot of work because all stickers were hand made.” Check out more of this beautiful racecar below, including the working functions.

Several of the car’s functions really work, including an opening hood, doors, and engine compartment.

These aren’t Star Wars minifigures you’re looking for

…but these Star Wars figures just may be the coolest ones around. We covered Omar Ovalle‘s Endor Trooper last month, but Omar’s been busy since then converting lots of LEGO Technic figures into awesome Star Wars characters. The Technic figures, which LEGO produced from the late 80s to the early 2000s, are considerably larger than traditional minifigures and have a lot more poseability. The size also allows more accurate scaling with small characters, like Yoda and the Jawas, who both look quite good as minifigures next to the Technic figs. Boba Fett definitely takes the cake for the best looking figure though, as he blasts his way out of the Sarlacc pit.Greetings from Dagobah

Meet Pokey the Technic Triceratops

Remi can build dinosaurs, no question about it. I saw Pokey at BrickCon last year but these new pictures were just posted online. Pokey is even more awesome in person. Very awesome. You can see the entire set here, including BrickCon pictures.

This banshee, by Antti Havala, is incredibly gorgeous and that isn’t something you can say about a lot of Technic builds. Sporting four rotors, two motors, adjustable rotor pitch and two LED headlights, this Banshee screams for attention.

LEGO and science: robot cat for scaredy rats

LEGO Mindstorms (and indeed regular technic) are a not unusual sight in science laboratories. Unfortunately I’m not lucky enough to need ‘work LEGO’ but I have looked jealously into labs that do. Typically it’s used to automate simple procedures or make quick reconfigurable rigs.

The Kim Laboratory of the University of Washington use LEGO in a novel way: to test fear in rats using the aptly named Robogator. This is certainly the first time I’ve seen LEGO used in neuroscience and I have to admit the idea of testing fear using a bright colourful toy robot is pretty clever and amusing. They have a few videos too.

Our occassional technic reviewer Peer Kreuger (mahjqa) doesn’t just know about technic, he’s a dab hand at building it. Drawing inspiration from the Metal Slug computer games and his own omniwheels he’s created the crazy remote controlled Metal Grudge. And to really take it to the next level he’s used camera cars to get action shots like the one above. Much more fun than a computer game.
